Breathing easy in your home is something we all want, especially here in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas where the seasons bring a variety of weather challenges. But sometimes, homes can feel stuffy, or you might notice an increase in humidity or stale air. That’s where HRVs and ERVs come into play, offering a great solution to boost your home’s ventilation and indoor air quality.

What Are HRVs and ERVs?
HRV stands for Heat Recovery Ventilator, and ERV stands for Energy Recovery Ventilator. Both systems help bring fresh air into your home while maintaining energy efficiency, but there’s a key difference. An HRV focuses on transferring heat between incoming and outgoing air, which is perfect if you’re looking to ventilate while keeping your home cozy in winter and cool in summer. On the other hand, an ERV not only recovers heat but also transfers moisture, balancing humidity levels—a great option for homes dealing with excess moisture during humid Portsmouth summers.

How They Work
HRVs and ERVs both work by exchanging stale indoor air with fresh outdoor air. As they do this, they transfer heat (and in the case of ERVs, moisture) to minimize the loss of energy. That means you’re not overworking your heating or cooling systems, even while improving your home’s air quality.

HRVs and ERVs are often a great addition to homes with ducted HVAC systems, like central air or ducted heat pumps, as they can be easily integrated into the existing ductwork. For homes with ductless systems—like wall-mounted heat pumps—an ERV or HRV can still be installed but will require separate ductwork specifically for ventilation. In either case, these systems work hand-in-hand with your HVAC to keep the air fresh and comfortable without sacrificing energy efficiency.

When to Consider an HRV or ERV
Are you dealing with poor ventilation, high humidity levels, or feeling like your indoor air is stale? Maybe your home is newer and built to be airtight, which is great for energy efficiency but not always ideal for air quality. An HRV or ERV can help alleviate these issues by circulating fresh air without compromising comfort or energy bills. The decision between the two often comes down to your home’s humidity levels. If moisture control is a big concern, like during the muggy months along the NH Seacoast, an ERV might be the better choice.
